Wireframe

Author : Audrey Moore

A wireframe is a draft drawing either digitally or hand sketched that provides a mock-up of a website design, app or software. It allows us to demonstrate a blueprint to the programmers/client to help them visualise the functionality, placement of pictures, text, audio and video. Wireframes do not typically have any colour or graphics, it is a very basic illustration of a pages interface. Obviously, there are some instances where a full wireframe phase is important but for the majority, it is not.

What does a wireframe look like?

It consists of grids and boxes to map out the text and where the pictures would be situated. The wireframe is normally just in black or grey colour. What we would discuss before drafting a Wireframe with the clients is to advise them to think about navigation, what is the most important aspect of the main page for their website/app, and where they would like the grids and text placed. When the wireframe is drafted, it can be shared and discussed at a meeting and changes are effortless, at this point. We have helped so many happy clients design their software and be in control of their design.

Are Wireframes really necessary?

Here is what an article on  UX Design website has to say about it

“Without it, you will just be designing the interface based on trial and error. The only bad part of this process? There are multiple steps just to complete this process. However, without it, your entire product will consume even more time in the long run because you will find errors and mistakes after the development. As a result, you need to go back to designing again and make amendments before passing it to the developers to code. This will go on and on. I bet you wouldn’t want that, right? Want to have a seamless flow with minor issues after the development of the mobile application? Include wireframing in your process and you will achieve that”.

  1. Thanks for sharing how you would go about designing a wireframe for SME, it's very useful to know the aspects involved in wireframe design and what we would need to think about embarking on a website project. Also v useful to know that it a collaborative approach between the agency and client.
