What is a Slogan?

 Author: Audrey Moore

A slogan is a short sentence that is both striking and memorable used in advertising. The role of a good slogan is to show the benefits of a product and to engrain it in your customers minds. This plays an important role in promoting your business, long term and to hold your company in a good place in the market. A lot of the big businesses use a 2d, black logo, as this keeps the costs down especially when doing promotional material and for merchandise.

Nike have a simple slogan, “Just Do It” which surprisingly enough, they were the last words of a death row inmate, which makes it a very interesting choice for a slogan, but it works!

I'm Lovin' It); McDonalds have kept this slogan for over ten years and the ‘do do do do’ beat before the words ‘Im loving it’ it is impossible not to sing.

Where did the word slogan originate?

“It is the Spanish translation of the English word  Slogan. It is not a word of English origin. The English received it, in turn, from a Celtic Indo-European language called Gaelic. Sluagh-ghairm is its original word whose meaning is battle cry. The first slogan It was “Your country needs you.” It was created in the First World War by the soldier Lord Kitchener”.

A great slogan must relate to everyday life situations and should touch users on an emotional level. It should be simple, short, easy and very catchy.

Slogans should be predictable enough to allow the consumer to identity to the brand for example M&Ms slogan. "Melt in mouth not in your hand" the consumer knows they are talking about chocolate or something edible.

Here is a list of award winning and iconic slogans, that I am sure you already know!

"What Happens Here Stays Here"

Las Vegas famous slogan launched nearly 10 years ago and invested around $10 million into television advertising for this slogan.

"The Best A Man Can Get" Gillette came under fire for not being manly enough and this slogan was hugely successful.

"Can You Hear Me Now?""Can you hear me now?" this was part of a larger campaign of Verizon Wireless employees. The man in the campaign has become extremely famous and forever linked to the mobile network operator.

"When It Absolutely, Positively, Has to Be There Overnight" One of FedEx 20 trademarked slogans.
